The Durban International Airport (formerly Louis Botha Airport ) was the international airport south of the metropolis of Durban , Province of KwaZulu-Natal , in the Republic of South Africa . The military part of the airport is known as Durban Air Force Base .

history

It was opened in 1955. For civil traffic, it was replaced on May 1, 2010 by King Shaka International Airport 30 km north of Durban. During the Soccer World Cup in 2010 it was still used by the South African Air Force and the police . Then the airfield was used as a military airfield at Air Force Base Durban (AFB Durban) by a helicopter squadron. In spring 2015 it was announced that the site would be used for a new container port . In 2017 it became known that the construction of the container port would be put on hold until "at least 2030".

Airport infrastructure

The airport had a runway and a terminal. The problem was the short runway, which prevented the widespread Boeing 747 model from being able to take off and land here fully loaded.

Durban Air Force Base

The Air Force Base Durban (short AFB Durban ) is located at the north end of the runway. It is home to the South African Air Force's 15 Helicopter Squadron . The main task of the 15 Squadron is search and rescue on land and at sea. Two Atlas Oryx are stationed at AFB Durban . The four BK 117 operated by the 15 Squadron were relocated from AFB Durban to AFS Port Elizabeth .

Stationed units

  • 15 Squadron - helicopter squadron
  • 508 Squadron
  • 105 Squadron - Citizen Force Liaison Squadron and Patrol Squadron for Crime Prevention. Reserve squadron that operates various civil light aircraft, mostly operated by civilian pilots.
