Austrian Forces Disaster Relief Unit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Austrian Forces Disaster Relief Unit ( AFDRU ) is the disaster relief element for Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) of the Austrian Armed Forces . AFDRU was launched in 1990 on the basis of experience gained in international disaster relief operations at home and abroad and has been directly and indirectly successful in many operations since 1997. The contingent consists of a management element, a supply element and an operational element.

AFDRU is only set up when the need arises from volunteers from the active and militia group and, if necessary, from civil specialists such as rescue dog handlers. The responsibility for the formation and formation of AFDRU lies with the command of the NBC defense school in Korneuburg .

Tasks and possible uses

The tasks of AFDRU are diverse and depend on the respective operation, but the main tasks are search and rescue operations in urban areas after earthquakes, as well as drinking water treatment after earthquakes and floods. Since AFDRU specialists (e.g. chemists, physicists, structural engineers, crisis and emergency managers, doctors, technicians) work in a wide variety of areas, AFDRU can also react well to extraordinary events and take appropriate measures. If necessary, an AFDRU mission is designed in such a way that it can be maintained for up to 10 days even without external supply. A SAR deployment by AFDRU is mostly supported by search and rescue dogs from civil organizations (e.g. rescue dog squadron of the fire brigade KHD Vienna, Austrian rescue dog brigade ), since the Austrian Armed Forces only have technical tracking capabilities.

Primary tasks

  • Search and rescue ( SAR or USAR ) of people (possibly also animals) by means of biological or technical location
  • Drinking water treatment using mobile drinking water treatment systems (TWA)
  • Organizational support and coordination (crisis and disaster management, UN emergency aid coordinator - OCHA )

Secondary tasks

  • Advisory functions (statics, chemistry, damage points, organization)
  • Recovery of goods and dead
  • Fire fighting
  • ABC detection, decontamination and disease control (on a small scale and mostly for self-protection)
  • Emergency and first aid for your own staff
  • (Self) supply
