Astronomy Picture of the Day (short APOD , German  astronomy picture of the day ) is a website that presents a different picture or a different photograph of the universe every day . The picture is accompanied by an explanation by an astronomer , usually written by one of the two APOD authors Robert J. Nemiroff and Jerry T. Bonnell. The website is jointly operated by NASA and Michigan Technological University (MTU). The images presented are not necessarily new and are sometimes repeated, however the image of the day and the associated description are often related to a current event in astronomy and space exploration .

The images include photographs in visible light , false- colored images of other areas of the electromagnetic spectrum , video material, animations or artistic views. Previous images can be viewed in the APOD archive, starting with the first image from June 16, 1995. This means that Astronomy Picture of the Day is probably one of the oldest “ photo blogs ” and, according to the operator, the largest collection of astronomy images with text on the Internet. The images presented also come from people and organizations outside NASA, which is why APOD images are often not in the public domain , in contrast to many other NASA image collections.

The APOD initiative is supported by NASA, the US National Science Foundation and MTU. The site was introduced to a wider audience at a 1996 American Astronomical Society meeting , was subject to hyperlinking research in 2000, and received a Sci / Tech Web Award in 2001 from popular science magazine Scientific American . In addition, it was repeatedly taken up in other media, such as in an interview with one of the two APOD authors Robert Nemiroff in the Saturday Morning News of the television channel CNN or in the November 2004 issue of the online library magazine D-Lib Magazine .

Astronomy Picture of the Day is mirrored by numerous other websites and translated into their respective national language. A German translation is maintained by the operators of the astronomy news portal Der Orion Eugen Reichl and Maria Pflug-Hofmayr. In 2003 the two APOD authors Robert Nemiroff and Jerry Bonnell published an illustrated book of the best APOD images entitled The Universe: 365 Days , and in 2006 another titled Astronomy: 365 Days .

In October 2013, the APOD server was affected by the government shutdown and can only be accessed via a mirror to a limited extent.
