method

As a representative survey, the study has taken place annually in the second quarter since 1997. Until 2000, internet users (online users) and non-users (offline users) were recorded in separate random samples ; since 2001 all German adults aged 14 and over have been included in the population. The sample is generated on the basis of the ADM selection basis . The samples are weighted on the basis of the media analyzes . The survey is carried out by telephone . The sample was used up between 70 and 72%. Since 2001 the samples have been set up as a daily sample. "Yesterday's" Internet usage can also be recorded in this way. For this purpose, the selected telephone numbers are randomly distributed over seven equally large weekday samples. This method also makes it possible to show differences between weekday and weekend Internet use.

The ARD / ZDF online study 2017 was carried out for the first time as part of the "Media and their audience (MiP) study series". The results are based on the merged data set of the new concept, with the core data in 2017 being based on a representative dual-frame sample of a total of 2017 German-speaking people aged 14 and over in Germany. The field work was carried out by the GfK MCR institute and lasted from the end of January to mid-April 2017.

Since 2017, the ARD / ZDF online study has been carried out together with the long-term study on mass communication as part of the “Media and Audience Study Series” (MiP). The series asks users about their use of video, audio and text media, differentiated between “classic” and online media.
