ATPases (short for adenosine triphosphatases ) are enzymes that can split ATP into ADP and phosphate . During this hydrolysis , energy is released that can be used by the enzyme to drive another reaction. Different ATPases promote the transport of ions , movement of muscle fibers or different reactions of the energy metabolism . ATPases are found in all living things. Some ATPases are membrane proteins . These membrane-bound ATPases are presented in a separate article.

In general, one speaks of NTPases if they can split any nucleoside triphosphates (NTP) into the corresponding diphosphates (NDP) and phosphate. Examples can be found with viruses such as the yellow fever virus and the haloarcula virus HHPV1 .
