The A 5120 the company Robotron was a GDR - office computer for text and data processing . The device was manufactured in the VEB booking machine factory in Karl-Marx-Stadt from 1982 . The price for this computer was - depending on the equipment - between around 27,000 and 40,000 marks . In the GDR it was only delivered to companies and institutions.

From 1986 a new version of the device came onto the market as A 5120.16 with the 16-bit microprocessor U8000 ( Zilog-Z8000 replica). In this device, the original system functioned as an 8-bit subsystem. The 16-bit part consisted of two additional plug-in cards (CPU and 256kByte DRAM ) and enabled the use of the powerful MUTOS8000 operating system ( Unix system III derivative). The price for this model was between about 32,000 and 48,000 marks.

A total of 17,000 copies of the A 5120 and A 5120.16 were produced.

hardware

Cassette drives and 8-inch floppy disk drives were initially used as mass storage devices . These models were quickly replaced by models with two to three 5.25-inch drives. A green monitor was built into the device, which was initially able to display 64 × 16 characters and later 80 × 25 characters. The computer was not capable of graphics. The computer was based on the 8-bit K-1520 bus system, and a U880 ( Z80 replica) was used as the processor . The main memory had a size of up to 64 kByte. There were also IFSS and V24 interfaces.

Software and operating system

In terms of the operating system, the K1520 computers, which also included the A5120, were tailored to the SIOS1526 operating system , an in-house development of the Robotron combine. In addition, the BCU880 operating system (a CP / M- type operating system) was initially used. However, the BCU880 was very quickly replaced by the SCP1526 (also a CP / M system), which became the most widely used operating system on this computer. Some companies have also developed their own CP / M modifications, such as CP / A ( Academy of Sciences , Berlin) or DAC1526 ( VEB Dampferzeugerbau ). Another operating system was UDOS1526, an operating system that was mainly intended for program development.

As software in the office, the user under SCP could, for example, use REDABAS (database software, corresponds to dBASE ) and TP ( word processing , corresponds to WordStar ).
