A bird story

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Bird Story (in German as: A bird story ) is an adventure game developed and published by Freebird Games . It was released in November 2014 for Microsoft Windows , OS X and Linux as a so-called mini-episode that combines Freebird Games' previous game, To the Moon , with its sequel, Finding Paradise .

Gameplay

A Bird Story is a short video game in which the player controls an imaginative boy who is ignored by the majority of the other characters and throughout the game; all characters except the boy and a few others have ghostly bodies. The environments in the game are often presented as if they were a collection of memories rather than real time; for example, the player could be in a park that leads into a hallway. In Kotaku's review , the lack of dialogue was compared to the phrase “ show, don't tell ”.

Development & Publication

A Bird Story was developed by Freebird Games using the RPG Maker XP . The porting to Linux and MacOS was performed using the open source tool MKXP . A Bird Story was released on November 5, 2014 primarily as a link between To the Moon and the actual sequel, Finding Paradise . It was the second minisode to come out between the release of To the Moon and the development of Finding Paradise . The protagonist is the same character that Finding Paradise is about, with Gao saying that players don't have to play A Bird Story to understand the sequel.

reception

A Bird Story received mixed reviews, with an overall rating of 66/100 on Metacritic based on 18 reviews and a rating of 68.67% on GameRankings based on nine reviews. Many reviewers compared this game to To the Moon , another game from Freebird Games. Andrew Barker said in a review for RPGFan that the game was a pleasant experience, but not for everyone; the pace of the game is slow and although it is an hour long, a memory of the game would remain. The lack of proper gameplay has been criticized by many critics; In an article by Rock, Paper, Shotgun , John Walker criticized the "incredibly slow" movement mechanics , in a Kotaku review by Cassidee Moser the only disadvantage listed was the linearity of the gameplay and in a review by PC Gamer by Tyler Wilde the game was called boring and slow, but still sentimentally described. Roger Hargreaves of UK newspaper Metro said it was a huge disappointment following the success of To the Moon . The predictability of the plot has also been criticized by Hargreaves along with other critics such as Eurogamer's Christian Donlan .
