A Shape of Light , complete title A Shape of Light: A Silent Voice The Movie Original Soundtrack , is an album by the Japanese composer and EBM musician Kensuke Ushio .

It is the official soundtrack for the movie A Silent Voice by director Naoko Yamada from 2016. The soundtrack, which comprises a total of 61 tracks on two CDs, was first released on September 14, 2016 by Pony Canyon . A North American release was realized in 2017 by Anime Limited , who released the soundtrack on CD and vinyl .

Emergence

Kensuke Ushio, who works as an EBM musician under the pseudonym agraph. appears, was announced in May 2016 as the composer for the film music for the anime film A Silent Voice , although in 2015 he was asked to be involved in the making of the film.

Most of the songs were composed by Ushio himself. An exception are the pieces with the abbreviation inv , which are based on Invention No. 1 in C major, BWV 772 by Johann Sebastian Bach .

For the creation of the film soundtrack, Ushio worked with director Naoko Yamada , and discussions between the two of them about the concept have already resulted in great agreement, which has continued with the development of the storyboard and the music. For the film, Ushio worked on sound concepts , which he had already done in previous projects. Ushio described A Silent Voice as " Shōya's story" about how he treats his fellow human beings and deals with them, which would be a universal topic if this were taken out of context. When developing the film scoring, the individual scenes were given to him. Ushio said that recording the sounds was very important to him. The piece lvs , which takes place in the scene in which Shōko is excluded from her classmates, was recorded inside a piano . For this purpose, Ushio took apart a piano and placed a microphone inside . The resulting sound effect makes the listener think that he is completely surrounded by the sound.

The film soundtrack was recorded in the Maruni Studios in Tokyo . In the piece slt , a guest musician played the violin tracks with Yuji Katsui . The mixing on the first CD was done by Hiroshi Kitashiro , on the second CD by Ushio himself. The mastering then took place in the Kimken Studio .

Ushio said that prior to working on the soundtrack for A Silent Voice, he was barely involved in film music creation. Yamada, who already knew the music of Ushio, contacted him through his management and asked for his assistance. Work on the film scoring began when large parts of the film's storyline still had to be worked out. The studio work was completed after sound director Yota Tsuruoka received and confirmed an overall plan of the musical concept.

For the soundtrack, Ushio wrote a total of 82 pieces, 61 of which can be found in the soundtrack and 50 can be heard in films, with most of the pieces being piano pieces .

The song titles on the first CD mostly consist of three letters with the exception of the pieces based on Johann Sebastian Bach's Intervention No. 1 in C major, BWV 772 , and the three pieces lvs (var) , van (var) and lit (var) . The names of these very pieces were identification codes of the composer when he composed the pieces and for which he received feedback during film production. Ushio decided not to give the pieces a name afterwards, but to leave them with these codes, so that the listeners would not get the meaning of the piece explained in advance.

However, these codes are not a random sequence of letters. So is htb , which can be heard on the first CD, for Heartbeat , the first song on the second CD of the soundtrack. htb is therefore a modified version of the song Heartbeat . Ushio describes the title inv and its variations as the most important pieces of the entire film soundtrack. Since, according to Ushio, Bach's intervention can be divided into three pieces, he also applied this to film, so that each section of the film received its own version of the piece inv .

In relation to the movie, the title inv , its modifications and the last piece of Bach's intervention provide a musical example of practicing communication as Shōya managed to do in the film, when he overcame his guilt from his time at elementary school and started a new path Communication has invented. Towards the end of the film, when Shōya and Shōko visit the cultural festival , the last piece of the intervention plays and is intended to symbolize the end of Shōya's practice.

Lit , which can only be heard twice in the entire film, stands for light - in German light . The film is about reaching the light, which is why the piece is played at the end of the film.

A Shape of Light debuted at number 74 on the Japanese music charts in the week of September 14, 2016 and stayed in the sales rankings for five weeks.

James Marsh, in his film review in the South China Morning Post , wrote that Kensuke Ushio's inconsistent score created a disturbing layer on the film's complex audible landscape, bringing audiences one step closer to the unique and distant worldview of Shōko Nishimiya . In his review for Anime News Network , Kevin Cirugeda wrote that director Naoko Yamada worked very closely with Ushio to develop the film music. With the exception of the song My Generation by the British rock band The Who , which was licensed for the film , the result was soft piano music , ambient sounds and absolute silence. There are no outstanding pieces worth mentioning. Instead, the entire film is described as one tremendous sensory experience. The sounds in the film play just as important a role as the background music.

The readers of the online platform Anime UK News voted the film soundtrack together with the official soundtrack for the anime series The Magician's Bride as the best film soundtrack of 2017.
