A Spell Inside is a German electro-pop band that was founded in 1989 in Neuss by singers Michael "Mel Row" Roeder and Peter "Pe Kirk" Kirchmeyer.

Band history

In March 1990, the guitarist Kirk joined the band and enriched the until then purely electronic band with rock and experimental guitar elements. In 1991 the self-produced demo The Wrong Spell was released , on which there were six tracks, including We Turn to Gray , the later theme song of the first regular album.

In 1992 the first appearances took place in Neuss and the surrounding area, including several times with the gothic rock band The Merry Thoughts . In the summer of 1993 the band played at an open air festival near Saarbrücken in front of more than 800 spectators. In the years 1991 to 1994 further demos with the title A Spell Inside and Revenge were published and various appearances at radio stations such as Radio Marabou and the WDR followed.

In 1994 the band went to the recording studio with Marvin Arkham, co-producer of The Merry Thoughts, to produce the first CD. Six songs, a cross-section from 1990 to 1994, were recorded. In 1995 the band signed a recording deal with Discordia and released the studio-produced debut mini-CD Return to Gray . This was followed by a concert with The Fair Sex and Dementia Simplex . In addition to purely electronic pieces with "Carreer", Return to Gray also contains a guitar-heavy piece from the early days of the band.

In 1996, just one year later, the band's first album, Visions from the Inside , was released . In the same year, the band and Kirk separated due to growing musical differences and the band was henceforth a duo. From this point on, the band always signed friends with guest musicians for concerts.

In 1997 a club tour through Germany was organized and the Maxi-CD Brothers came out. However, her label Discordia went bankrupt. From 1998 there were only a few appearances. Michael Roeder devoted himself more to his second volume Behind the Scenes .

In February 2002 the band returned after a long break and gave a concert in the sold-out Düsseldorf Basement Club. Further concerts in Lübeck and Zittau followed. The double CD Stories from the Inside was also released , on which unpublished and sometimes rare pieces were re-released. The CD was released under on the Triton label. In the same year the album Hit was released . The collaboration with Triton was ended again after the album, in 2003 the band switched to the Scanner / Dark Dimensions label.

The album Vitalizer was released in mid-2004 .

In 2008 a best-of CD entitled Essential - A Collection of Rare and Exclusive Tracks was released.

The album Loginside was released in 2009. Several appearances followed, such as B. at the WGT in Leipzig, Düsseldorf, Oberhausen and Scandinavia. After two years of studio work, Autopilot was released on 2014 , which is a novelty with only German lyrics except for one song in English. It took 5 years until the next album Masterplan was ready, which was finally released in June 2019 and was presented live one day after the release at the Wave Gotik Treffen in Leipzig.

style

The band's inspiration in the early years were bands like Human League and Depeche Mode . Michael Roeder is responsible for the majority of the band's music and lyrics. A Spell Inside combine catchy melodies, dynamic bass lines and powerful beats to create a mixture of electro, pop and melancholic wave. The spirit of the early 80s is combined with the technical possibilities of today. Michael Roeder's singing shapes the style of the band.
