Aage Gerhardt Drachmann

Aage Gerhardt Drachmann (born October 22, 1891 in Copenhagen , † April 9, 1980 in Lyngby ) was a Danish ancient historian and librarian .

life and work

Aage Gerhardt Drachmann, the son of the classical scholar Anders Bjørn Drachmann (1860–1935) and the teacher Ellen Sophie geb. Bentzon (1866–1948), studied Classical Philology and English at the University of Copenhagen from 1909 to 1915 . After the state examination he worked at the university library: first as an assistant assistant, from 1919 as a sub-librarian. From 1926 to 1927 he undertook a research trip to the United States lasting several months and made use of its experience in the library service. For example, he introduced new copying processes at the university library. In 1929 Drachmann headed the Danish Research Library in Rome for a few months. From the 1930s he also wrote articles for library journals and academic studies; He also published the Index Medicus Danicus , a bibliographical journal for medicine. In 1943 Drachmann was appointed senior librarian at the Copenhagen University Library. In 1948 he received his PhD from the University of Copenhagen. phil. PhD . In 1956 he retired, but continued to work as a journalist and scientist.

Drachmann's main research interests were medicine, natural science and ancient technology. He wrote books on pneumatic medicine, oil mills, ancient mechanics and Caesar's Rhine Bridge; He also wrote several articles for the Realcyclopedia of Classical Classical Antiquities (RE). In addition, Drachmann dealt with English literature, Danish folk tales and ornithology . Drachmann was a member of the Académie Internationale d'Histoire des Sciences, the German Society for the History of Medicine, Natural Science and Technology and the Society for the History of Technology. In 1971 he received the Leonardo da Vinci Medal.
