Aasta Hansteen (born December 10, 1824 in Oslo , then Kristiania ; † April 13, 1908 ibid) was a Norwegian painter , writer and early feminist .

Life

She was the daughter of a Danish mother and of Christopher Hansteen , a professor of astronomy and geophysics at Oslo University . She began her artistic training in 1840 for two years in Copenhagen. From 1849 to 1852 she lived in Düsseldorf , at that time a preferred training location for Scandinavian painters and known for the Düsseldorf School of Painting . As early as 1855, works by her were shown during the Paris World Exhibition . Her successes continued after her return to Oslo. At that time she was considered the only portrait painter in town. One of the most important works from this period is a portrait of her father that now hangs in the National Museum in Oslo .

Overwhelmed by general interest, she eventually retired to Telemark Province for several years . There she began to study Norwegian dialects. After her return to Kristiana / Oslo, she started studying with the linguist Ivar Aasen . In 1862 she anonymously published a little booklet in Nynorsk with the title Skrift og Umskrift i Landsmaalet and thus became the first woman to publish a publication in this language.

In 1880 Hansteen emigrated to the United States, where she spent nine years. After her return to Norway, she was particularly committed to women's equality. As a strong and sometimes contradicting personality, she was the model for Lona Hessel in Henrik Ibsen's play Supports of Society as well as for the main character in Gunnar Heiberg's aunt Ulrike . She was regarded as hostile to men and was added to the well-known originals of her hometown. Her grave in Vår Frelsers Gravlund Cemetery in Oslo is still adorned with a bust by the important sculptor Gustav Vigeland .
