Mitel Networks Corporation is a globally active, publicly traded company headquartered in Ottawa , Ontario , Canada . The company's focus is on IP telephony and other solutions for voice and data communication, including the development of IP-oriented communication solutions.

history

Aastra Technologies Limited was founded in 1983 and started out as a development consultant for the aerospace and defense industries . In 1986 the company was converted into a stock corporation . In 1992, increased activities in the telecommunications sector were taken up, followed by an initial public offering on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) in 1996. In order to expand further, the telephone system divisions were taken over by European companies, such as those of the Swiss company Ascom (September 2003), the European one EADS (February 2005) and the German DeTeWe (2005). In May 2006, Aastra sold its video business unit in order to focus more on its core competencies in the communications sector and the growth market of IP telephony. At the beginning of 2007 the company took over Matracom Networks AG, Switzerland, in order to consolidate its position in Europe and to expand its activities in the area of ​​large customers and to expand its product portfolio. At the beginning of 2008, Aastra Technologies bought the PBX division of the Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson with 630 employees for 650 million Swedish kronor (approx. 70 million euros). In 2012, Aastra took over the German fixed mobile convergence provider Comdasys AG. Aastra was acquired by Mitel Networks Corporation in February 2014 , but remained in the market as a brand until September 2014. Aastra has been operating under the Mitel name and logo since October 1, 2014.

Aastra annually invests around 10% of its total turnover in research and development projects. Investments are also planned in the areas of data and voice convergence, IP telephony , mobility and security.

Shareholders

In February 2014, Mitel acquired all of the issued and outstanding common shares of Aastra. Under the terms of the agreement, Aastra shareholders received US $ 6.52 in cash plus 3.6 common shares of Mitel for each Aastra common share. The total amount paid by Mitel was approximately US $ 80.0 million and the number of Mitel shares outstanding was 44,162,509. Mitel financed the purchase price of the transaction with cash and a portion of the proceeds from the new credit facility.
