Abaje

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abaje ( Abbaje / Abajje / Abaje bar Nachmani ) was an important Babylonian Amorae of the 4th generation (320-350).

Grew up with and companion of Raba (Rawa) in Pumbedita , with whom he had many debates (these hawajot abaje we-raba are the epitome of Talmudic dialectic and make up a large part of the discussion in the Babylonian Talmud; the halacha mostly followed the opinion of Rawas) .

Abaje lived about 280–339, was the son of Kajlil, who was a brother of Rabba (h) bar Nachmani .

Abaje was a student of his uncle Rabbah and especially Joseph's (Rabbi Josef bar Chijja) . As his successor, Abaje was head of the school in Pumbedita for five years before his (own) death.

Abaje should not be confused with the 2nd generation Palestinian Amora of the same name.
