Hanoch Albeck (born August 3 . Jul / 15. August  1890 greg. In Lowicz , Russian Empire , died 9. January 1972 in Jerusalem ) was a Jewish scholar and the most outstanding Mishnah Researchers his time.

life and work

Chanoch Albeck studied in Vienna at the rabbinical seminary and received his rabbinical ordination in 1915. In 1921 he achieved an academic degree (Dr. phil.) At the University of Vienna .

From 1926 to 1936 Chanoch Albeck taught Talmud at the University for the Science of Judaism in Berlin and then emigrated to Palestine in 1936 , where he was appointed Professor and Head of Talmudic Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem that same year , a position which he held for 25 years.

He developed an extensive publication activity and wrote, among other things, groundbreaking introductions and commentaries on Mishnah, Baraita , Tosefta , Talmud, etc. He also published regularly in the scientific journal Tarbiz .

His students included B. Avraham Goldberg or Abraham Joshua Heschel .

family

His father, Schalom Albeck (1858–1920), was also an outstanding Talmudic scholar and worked mainly in Breslau .

Among Chanoch Albeck's children are Prof. Michael Albeck, lecturer in chemistry, and Prof. Schalom Albeck, lecturer in Jewish law (both at Bar Ilan University ).

Albeck's son-in-law, Arjeh Bachrach, died in the Israeli War of Independence in 1948.

Awards

In 1957, Chanoch Albeck was to receive the Israel Prize , but refused to accept it - as well as to accept other prizes - for reasons of principle.

In 1959 he became a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences .

In 1969 he received the Bialik Prize for his introduction to the Talmudim .
