Abarnias

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abarnias ( Greek  Ἀβαρνίας ; also Abarnis or Abarnos ) was the ancient name for the coastal region and a promontory near the city of Lampsakos in Asia Minor on the east coast of the Hellespont (Dardanelles) . According to Stephanos of Byzantium , there was also a city here called Abarnias , which is otherwise not attested.

In this area there is a birthday of the god Priapus : Aphrodite was first the wife of Dionysus , but during his journey to India she started an affair with Adonis and from this he became pregnant with Priapus. When Dionysus returned, she fled to Lampsakus and gave birth to Priapus, who was born deformed through the magic of Hera, who was jealous of the new son of gods . Because Aphrodite denied it because of its ugliness, the place is said to have received its name Aparnis, later Abarnis (field of lies). According to Ephorus , however, the place was named after an identical Abarnis in the area ofNamed Phocaeans .

405 BC BC Lysander kept the main sails of his ships in the coastal region of Abarnis when he fought the battle of Aigospotamoi against Athens, which ended with his victory . On the run, however, Konon succeeded in taking possession of this mainsail with a blow.
