Abbo (Bishop of Nevers)
Abbo († December 6, 882 , December 6, 883 or December 6, 884 ) was Bishop of Nevers in the second half of the 9th century .
Life
The distinction made in the Gallia christiana between two incumbent bishops of Nevers named Abbo in quick succession - 862 or from 866 - is rejected by A. Rastoul in the corresponding article in the Dictionnaire de Biographie française ; rather, both would be identical. The allegedly acting between the two Abbos Luidon was Bishop of Autun . Rastoul also rejects the assumption that the first Abbo followed a Raginus ; Instead, one and the same Abbo assumed the office of bishop from Hériman, who died at the time, around 860 and exercised it continuously until around 883.
Abbo took part in several councils held in France during the reign of Charles the Bald , including the one in Soissons in 866 , in Troyes in 867 - at which he granted privileges in a document from the Church of Saint Vincent de Magney -, in Metz and in 869 Vermerie, 875 in Chalon-sur-Saône and in summer 876 in Ponthion . At the latter synod, the West Franconian nobility confirmed the election of Charles the Bald as Roman Emperor. His successors Ludwig II and Karlmann also remained loyal to Abbo and participated in another council convened in Troyes in 878. He also went to the Abbey of Saint-Germain d'Auxerre on behalf of Archbishop Ansegis von Sens to fetch the relics of St. Romanus from there.
The day of Abbo's death falls on December 6th. The exact year of his death is not known; according to documented material he was still alive in 882, while in August 885 Eumenes had already assumed the office of bishop of Nevers.
