Ansegis († November 25, 883 ) was Archbishop of Sens from 871 to 883 .

Life

Ansegis, a Benedictine monk , was abbot of St. Michel in Beauvais and from 871 Archbishop of Sens. He was a confidante of the West Frankish King Charles the Bald , who entrusted him several times with embassies to the Pope. After Charles' coronation as emperor in 875, Ansegis was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Gaul and Germania by Pope John VIII . He had the right to convene synods and to act as mediator between the Pope and the bishops. However, this claim was rejected by the West Franconian bishops, especially Hinkmar von Reims . Even if the claim could not be enforced, the Archbishops of Sens carried the title Galliae et Germanorum primas into the 20th century . 879 crowned Ansegis Karl's grandson Ludwig III. and Karlmann .
