Abd al-Aziz al-Ghadir

Abd al-Aziz al-Ghadir ( Arabic عبد العزيز الغدير, also written in German as Abdul Asis al-Ghadeer or Abdulaziz bin Ibrahim Al-Ghadir ) is a Saudi Arabian diplomat and his country's ambassador to Pakistan since June 2009 .

Life

Al-Ghadir has worked for the Saudi Arabian Foreign Ministry since the mid-1980s and held a post at the embassy in Rome for five years. He was also Deputy Director in the Ministry of Education, Manager of Bilateral Economic Relations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Director of Administration for Saudi Schools Abroad and Foreign Schools in Saudi Arabia. Before being named Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to Pakistan in 2009, Al-Ghadir served as Ambassador to Turkmenistan for eight years .

Ambassador to Pakistan

Al-Ghadir took his oath as ambassador to Pakistan on June 13, 2009. The office is considered an important post as there are very close bilateral relations between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, which are ascribed a high level of importance in both countries. Between 2006 and 2009, Pakistan received $ 1.52 million in loans and benefits from Saudi Arabia. Remittances from Pakistani migrant workers in Saudi Arabia are also important ; among the 16.5 million native people of Saudi Arabia, around 900,000 to 1 million Pakistanis live and work. During al-Ghadir's tenure as ambassador, the flood disaster in Pakistan occurred in 2010 , in which Saudi Arabia provided aid amounting to 361.99 million US dollars. In January 2011, al-Ghadir negotiated the extradition of wanted Saudi extremists and in April 2011 the execution of three Pakistanis in Saudi Arabia despite previously paid blood money .

After Osama bin Laden was killed in a US commando operation in Abbottabad on May 2, 2011 , his relatives were imprisoned in Pakistan and the Pakistani government negotiated unsuccessfully with al-Ghadir and the Saudis about their repatriation . A few days later, the Saudi consulate general in Karachi was attacked with two hand grenades and on May 16, 2011 the security officer of the consulate general, Hassan al Kahkani, was shot dead by five strangers in the car. Al-Ghadir suspected terrorists behind the attack and declared that "someone who commits such an act cannot be a Muslim". Pakistani investigators suspect al-Qaeda and local supporters to be behind the attack, which is supposed to protest against the Saudi refusal to take them back and against a possible extradition to the USA.
