The Asharq Al-Awsat ( Arabic الشرق الأوسط asch-Sharq al-Ausat , DMG aš-šarq al-ausaṭ ) is one of the largest Arabic- language daily newspapers in the world. The name of the newspaper literally means the Middle East , but in German it is called the Middle East .

The newspaper was founded in 1978 by Jihad Al Khazen in London , where there is still an editorial office. The newspaper is owned by the Saudi Prince Faisal bin Salman , son of King Salman ibn Abd al-Aziz . Today it is managed by Saudi Research and Marketing Ltd. which, in addition to other Arabic-language publications, also brings out the English-language newspaper Arab News . One of the most successful editors-in-chief of Asharq Al-Awsat, Abdulrahman Al Rashid, took over the management of the news channel Al-Arabija in 2004 . Editor-in-chief since 2004 is Tariq Al-Homayed, who was replaced by Adel Al-Toraifi in 2012.

The Asharq al-Awsat, which describes itself as pan -Arabic, has been increasingly “Saudiised” according to observers in recent years. Editorial positions in relatively expensive London have been cut. The positions of Saudi foreign policy could be read better from the editorials of the paper than from the official statements.

The journalist Mona Eltahawy described “red lines” that one should not cross at Asharq al-Awsat; primarily criticism of the ruling Al Saud family , then the neighboring Gulf states (apart from criticism of rival Qatar, which has been released) and, thirdly, Saudi Arabia's other Arab partner countries.

The newspaper is said to have a circulation of around 237,000 copies, of which around 175,000 are sold in Saudi Arabia. However, there is a lack of independent, reliable and comparable circulation figures for Arabic newspapers.

The newspaper has been available on the Internet since December 1995 and publishes its articles there in English .

During the civil war in Syria , she serves as a mouthpiece for the Free Syrian Army .
