Mona Eltahawy
Mona Eltahawy ( Arabic منى الطحاوي, DMG Munā aṭ-Ṭaḥāwī ; born August 1, 1967 in Port Said , Egypt ) is an Egyptian-American journalist. She describes herself as a secular radical feminist Muslim . At the center of Eltahawy's journalistic work is the criticism of misogyny in the Arab world.
Life
Mona Eltahawy moved with her parents, both of whom work as doctors, from Egypt to Great Britain in 1974 and to Saudi Arabia in 1983 . Eltahawy studied journalism at the American University in Cairo and passed the bachelor's examination in 1990 and the master's examination in 1992. Since then she has worked as a journalist and was a correspondent for Reuters in Cairo and Jerusalem for six years . Eltahawy took off the hijab in 1993 , which she had been wearing since 1983.
Eltahawy has lived in the USA since 2000. She wrote a weekly column in Asharq al-Awsat from 2004 to 2006 , but this was removed because of her critical stance on the then Mubarak regime .
Eltahawy works as a reporter in the Middle East. In 2005 she interviewed the then leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mohammed Mahdi Akef, in Cairo. Her articles appear in the Washington Post , The New York Times , International Herald Tribune , The Guardian, and the Christian Science Monitor . During the 2011 revolution in Egypt , she was a sought-after interviewee in the western media and was an important commentator on the feminist website Jezebel . In November 2011 she was arrested and mistreated by the Egyptian police on Tahrir Square , her tweet Beaten arrested in interior ministry ensured her liberation after twelve hours. She was arrested in New York City in 2012 when she sprayed an American Freedom Defense Initiative poster .
