Abdel Meguid Mahmud

Abdel Meguid Mahmud ( Arabic عبد المجيد محمود, DMG ʿAbd al-Maǧīd Maḥmūd , engl. and French also Abdel Meguid Mahmoud ; * 1946) was the National Prosecutor General of the Republic of Egypt from 2006 to 2012 .

At the beginning of February 2011, Meguid Mahmud announced the decision that Ahmed al-Maghrabi was one of the former members of the government who are not allowed to leave Egypt and that their assets have been frozen.

After Mahmud acquitted 24 officials of the Mubarak government for lack of evidence in October 2012 , the new Egyptian president , Mohammed Morsi , tried to remove him from office by offering Mahmud the post of Egyptian ambassador to the Vatican . However, the latter refused, saying that Mursi did not have the right to dismiss him, according to Mahmud. On November 22nd, Morsi suspended the separation of powers by a decree, which also included the final release of Mahmud into early retirement and his replacement with Talat Ibrahim Abdullah . Mahmud then, on behalf of the Egyptian Supreme Judicial Council , said in front of the cameras that this was "an unprecedented attack on the Egyptian judiciary, an attack on the freedom and independence of justice". He also stated that the judges would not accept that Morsi should place himself above the law.

On July 2, the Egyptian Court of Appeals reinstated Abdel Meguid Mahmud as attorney general.
