Theresa "Terry" Reintke (born May 9, 1987 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ). Reintke was the spokesperson for the Federation of Young European Greens from 2011 to 2013 . She has been a member of the European Parliament since the 2014 European elections and was re-elected in 2019 . She is a member of the Greens / EFA group. Since 2019 she has been one of the seven vice-chairs of this group.

Life

Terry Reintke grew up in the Ruhr area . After graduating from the Annette-von-Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium in Gelsenkirchen-Buer , Reintke studied political science at the Free University of Berlin and in Edinburgh from 2006 to 2012 . She completed her studies with a diploma and a thesis on "Local NGOs and sexual violence in the Balkan conflicts". She then worked as a research assistant in the German Bundestag for the MP Ulrich Schneider .

Political commitment

Engagement in the Green Youth and the FYEG

Reintke had been a member of the Green Youth since 2004 ; she was active in various functions. For two years she was on the women's commission and coordinator of the specialist forum on equality. Subsequently she was a member of the international representation and coordinator of the Middle East / Israel-Palestine expert forum. From 2008 to 2009 she was a member of the federal board of the Green Youth.

From 2011 to 2013 Reintke was the spokesperson for the Federation of Young European Greens , the European association of green youth organizations. In the board of directors, Reintke was responsible for the member organizations DWARS (Netherlands), DEM (Macedonia), Revolt (Bosnia) and the Croatian Young Greens. She has been a member of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen since 2012 . Since October 2014 Reintke has also been a member of the Young European Federalists Germany in the state association of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Election to the European Parliament in 2014

At the federal delegates' conference of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in February 2014, Reintke was elected to 9th place on her party's national list for the 2014 European elections in the third ballot . This place on the list was sufficient for entry into the European Parliament ; she joined the group The Greens / EFA .

In the 8th legislature of the European Parliament (2014-2019) she was a member of the committees for employment and social affairs , for regional development and for women's rights and gender equality . She was also part of the delegation for the EU-Montenegro Stabilization and Association Parliamentary Committee (D-ME) and was co-chair of the Youth Intergroup. She has been co-chair of the LGBTI intergroup since 2017.

In 2015 it brought an own- initiative report on Cohesion Policy and Societal Marginalized Groups (2014/2247 (INI)) through Parliament, which particularly addressed the situation of the European Roma . In 2016, Parliament adopted its report on gender equality and women's empowerment in the digital age. She was also the negotiator of the Greens group for the reform of the Posting of Workers Directive . Her work against sexual harassment attracted particular attention. As part of the international #metoo campaign, she campaigned against sexual harassment and sexual violence in the European Parliament.

Re-election to the European Parliament in 2019

In November 2018, Reintke ran for the European elections list at the federal delegate conference of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen, the delegates nominated her for third place on the list. Her party won 21 of the 96 German mandates in the European elections with 20.5 percent of the vote, so Reintke moved in straight away. She rejoined the Greens / EFA group , for the group she is in the 9th legislature a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs . She is also a deputy member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs and the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality . In addition, she was elected by the members of her group as one of the seven deputy group chairmen.

In the run-up to the election of the President of the EU Commission Presidents, Reintke was part of the group's intergroup negotiating team in order to develop a joint work program for the European Parliament. Together with her group colleague Ernest Urtasun , she negotiated the issues of migration, borders and the rule of law for the group.
