Abdelhadi Soudi

Abdelhadi Soudi is a Moroccan linguist and professor at the École Nationale de L'Industrie Minérale in Rabat, Morocco. He conducts research in the field of applied and theoretical linguistics on the subjects of language technology , computational linguistics , machine translation , computer-aided language learning and question-answering.

Study and activity

After obtaining a linguistic degree from Ibn Zohr University, Agadir in 1991, Soudi completed two master’s courses in 1993 and 1996 ( diplôme d'études approfondies and diplôme d'études supérieures) at the Mohammed V University in Rabat , also in the field of linguistics. At the same time he graduated as a programmer from the Institute of Computer Science and Management (IFIAG) in Rabat. He wrote his dissertation A Computational Lexeme-Based Treatment of Arabic Morphology in the field of computational linguistics at the Mohammed V University in 2002 (in collaboration with the Carnegie Mellon's Language Technologies Institute).

Soudi is currently the director of the Center de Langues et Communication at the École Nationale de L'Industrie Minérale in Rabat. He also heads the multidisciplinary research team Language Engineering, Technologies and Handicap , is a member of the advisory board of the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities and liaison scientist of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for Morocco.

Soudi spent numerous research stays at universities and language laboratories. Among other things, he was a Fulbright scholar in the USA several times and in Germany with the support of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Other research stays took him to Belgium, Great Britain, Italy, Libya, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Soudi is or was involved in the following projects:

  • 2014–2016: Project leader of Tools and Resources to improve Deaf Educational Access to Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics The project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development together with the National Academy of Sciences and the National Science Foundation (USA).
  • 2012–2014: Project leader of Assistive Technologies for Improving Literacy among the Deaf and Hard of Hearing . The project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development , together with the National Academy of Sciences and the National Science Foundation (USA) and has the development of software to the goal that the Moroccan Sign Language into Arabic translated and from Arabic.
  • 2011–2012: Project leader of Affordable Design and Entrepreneurship - Morocco in cooperation with the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering and the Babson College (USA). The project was funded by the US Embassy in Morocco together with the Moroccan Fulbright Alumni Association.
  • 2005–2006: Initiator of a research and education cooperation between the USA and Morocco in the field of language technologies, financed by the National Science Foundation (USA).
  • Project leader of a rule-based machine translation project (English – Arabic), funded by the Moroccan Center National pour la Recherche Scientifique et Technique (CNRST).
  • 2004–2005: Co-leader of a research project to develop linguistic tools that support (machine) translation from Arabic to Italian and vice versa. The project was carried out in collaboration with the Istituto di Linguistica Computazionale , Pisa and jointly funded by the CNRST (Morocco) and the National Center for Research (Italy).
  • 2004–2006: Employee at NEMLAR ( Network for Euro-Mediterranean Language Resources ), a project for the development of language resources, financed by the European Union.
