Abdul Jalilul Akbar

Abdul Jalilul Akbar was the tenth Sultan of Brunei according to official census. He came to the throne in 1598 when his father Muhammad Hassan died and ruled until his death in 1659. In his first years of reign, his uncle Pengiran Di-Gadong Sahibul Mal Besar Omar was still the regent .

Life

Abdul Jalilul Akbar was the son of Sultan Muhammad Hassan. Before his reign, Abdul was called Raja Tua Abdul Jalil .

family

He married a princess of Java , Radin Mas Ayu Siti Aishah , the daughter of Kiyai Temenggong Manchu Negoro of Gresik . From this connection the sons Abdul Jalilul Jabbar , Muhyiddin , Raja Omar , Pengiran Derma Wangsa Pengiran Muda Bongsu , Pengiran Di-Gadong , Sahibul Mal Raja So Shahbudin and four daughters were born.

Other children of concubines were Pengiran Muda Besar Abdullah (the father of Nassaruddin ), Raja Tengah and Raja Besar .

Contacts with Europeans

During his reign there were numerous contacts with European colonialists . Among other things, he introduced regulated diplomatic relations with the Spanish in Manila in 1599 .

In December 1600 and January 1601 a Dutchman , Olivier Van Noort , visited Brunei and recorded vivid accounts of the country. Although he did not mention the name of the ruling sultan anywhere, Van Noort described that the Sultan of Brunei was under the supervision of his uncle.

In 1612 a British navigator, Sir Henry Middleton , visited the Sultanate of Brunei on his way to the East Indies.

death

The Sultan died in 1659 after 61 years of reign. After his death he was given the title Marhum Tua . He was succeeded by his son, Abdul Jalilul Jabbar .
