Hassan (Brunei)

Muhammad Hassan was the ninth Sultan of Brunei according to official census. He ruled from 1582 to 1598. He came to the throne when his older brother and predecessor Shah Berunai died without a male heir. Muhammad Hassan's successor was Abdul Jalilul Akbar . His reign was marked by large territorial gains for the sultanate. He is often compared to Sultan Iskandar Muda Mahkota Alam of Aceh .

Life

Muhammad Hassan was the son of Saiful Rijal , the 7th Sultan of Brunei. His four sons all became sultans. Two of them, Abdul Jalilul Akbar and Muhammad Ali , became sultans of Brunei. His second son, Pengiran Muda Tengah Ibrahim Ali Omar Shah , called Sultan Tengah , became the first and last sultan of Sarawak . The youngest son, Raja Bongsu , was proclaimed Sultan of Sulu and was named Muwallil Wasit I. His daughter, Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Noralam was married to Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin , the 13th Sultan of Brunei. Another daughter, Raja Bonda , was born with Alauddin Riayat Shah III. married to the fifth sultan of Johor .

Reign

After Sultan Bolkiah , Sultan Muhammad Hassan was one of the rulers through whom Brunei grew to become the Brunei Empire . According to the Silsilah Raja-Raja Berunai , he was a powerful warrior who conquered the territories of Bajau and Sulu . He also said Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Di-Gadong command Milau in Sarawak to conquer.

In Brunei he introduced the Hukum Kanun Brunei , a code of law corresponding to the Undang-Undang Melaka of Malacca , and introduced two vizier offices: Pengiran Di-Gadong and Pengiran Pemancha .

death

Muhammad Hassan died in his Tanjong Chendana palace in 1598 . He was buried at Kampong Bunga , Tanjong Kindana - Brunei.

After his death he was named Marhum Di Tanjung .

legacy

The lineage of Pulau Janggi is said to go back to Sultan Hassan .
