from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nasaruddin ( Nasruddin ; Arabic نصر الدِّين; d. 1710) was the fifteenth Sultan of Brunei according to official census. He succeeded his uncle, Muhyiddin, to the throne when the latter died in 1690 and ruled from 1690 to 1710. After his death he was given the title of Marhum Di Kianggeh .

Life

origin

Nasaruddin was the son of Pengiran Muda Besar Abdullah , the son of Sultan Abdul Jalilul Akbar , and the Pengiran Anak Puteri Besar , the daughter of Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin .

Succession to the throne

Sultan Nasaruddin's father, Pengiran Muda Besar Abdullah , was the eldest son of Sultan Abdul Jalilul Akbar . As the first son, Pengiran Muda Besar Abdullah also came first in the line of succession. However, his younger brother, Abdul Jalilul Jabbar, became sultan in 1659. When Muhyiddin died in 1690, his heir was only 11 years old, and since Nasaruddin's father was the first son of Sultan Abdul Jalilul Akbar, he was installed as the 15th Sultan of Brunei.

Reign

Nasaruddin was a prudent and wise ruler. He was the first to introduce a Gol currency in the Sultanate.

Dato Godam

During his reign, Dato Godam (also: Raja Umar ) also visited the Sultanate of Brunei. He was a prince of the Sultanate of Pagaruyung in southwest Sumatra . Dato Godam was highly valued by Nasaruddin for his intelligence and experience in administrative matters. Therefore he brought him to his advisory staff. Oral tradition says that Dato Godam was loved by Nassaruddin for his honesty, skill and leadership qualities.

However, Dato Godam's father, Datu Bendahara Harun of Pagaruyung , Minangkabau , sent envoys to track him down and bring him home. When the ambassadors received an audience with Sultan Nassaruddin in Lapau and declared that he was to be his father's successor, the Sultan hesitated. Ultimately, however, he allowed Dato Godam and his eldest son Manteri Uban (Abdul Rahman) to return. Dato Godam's second son, Manteri Puteh (Dato Said) stayed in Brunei.

In parting, Nassaruddin promised his protégé that he and the following gentlemen from Brunei would always give his descendants income and privileges. The title of Manteri , which was given to the descendants of Dato Godam by the subsequent sultans of Brunei, dates from this period . Some of the descendants continued to serve in the administration of Brunei.

death

The Sultan died in 1710. He was buried at Makam Diraja Kianggeh . His successor was his cousin Sultan Hussin Kamaluddin .
