The species has a large range that covers about 150,000 square kilometers in the Central American countries of Mexico , Belize , Guatemala , Honduras , El Salvador, and Nicaragua . The IUCN classifies the population as “not at risk” ( least concern ).

features

The emerald-throated hummingbirds reach a body length of about 7 to 7.5 centimeters. The short straight beak becomes about 9.8 millimeters long and the forked tail is quite wide. Males and females are different because the male has a black beak while the female has a different color. The hummingbird is spotted with white around the eyes. This is in sharp contrast to the green crown and the rest of the head. The ring collar shimmers green and merges into black or dark gray at the throat. The lower part is dusty gray with green spots on the chest and flanks. The neck and the top have a deep blue-green. The inner control feathers are also blue-green but become dark blue with gray spots on the outside. The female is pale gray on the neck and underside. There is a dark white border around the eyes. The side and flanks shimmer in a mottled green. The outer tail feathers are speckled with white.

Habitat

The bird prefers moist evergreen deciduous forest, as well as pine forest . He moves relatively deep, but avoids open terrain. You can usually see it at altitudes over 900 meters.

Subspecies

Distribution area of the emerald-throated hummingbird

So far, two subspecies are known.

  • Abeillia abeillei abeillei ( Lesson & Delattre , 1839)
  • Abeillia abeillei aurea W. Miller & Griscom , 1925

The subspecies abeillei can be found in southeast Mexico to Guatemala and from El Salvador to northern Honduras. The subspecies aurea is native to southern Honduras and northern Nicaragua.

behavior

The emerald-throated hummingbird flies relatively quickly. He builds his nest in the form of a deep calyx. The breeding season is from February to March. He prefers to move in the undergrowth.

Etymology and history of research

René Primevère Lesson and Adolphe Delattre described the emerald- throated hummingbird under the name Ornismya Abeillei . The type specimen came from Jalapa . In his Conspectus generum avium from 1850, Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte created the new genus Abeillia , for which he called the species Abeillia typica? Bonaparte (synonym for Abeillia abeillei ) provided. However, at this point he was not sure whether the hummingbird actually belonged to the genus Ramphomicron . The genus and species was dedicated to the French military surgeon Grégoire Abeillé (1798–1848), who was then living in Bordeaux. "Aurea" comes from the Latin word "aureus, aurum" and means "golden, gold".
