Abel Gullane (also de Golynn ) († December 1, 1254 ) was a Scottish clergyman. From 1254 he was Bishop of the Diocese of St Andrews .

Abel Gullane was designated as a master , which suggests a degree. He was favored by King Alexander II and so came into the possession of numerous spiritual benefices , including the office of archdeacon of the diocese of St Andrews . During the minority of King Alexander III. The Regency Council was heavily influenced by Walter Comyn, Earl of Menteith from the beginning of 1252 . After the death of Bishop David Bernham 1253 which elected cathedral chapter of St Andrews unanimously Robert mare Ville , the dean of the Cathedral of Dunkeld , the new bishop. In doing so, the chapter supported the Justiciar of Scotia Alan Durward , who was deposed in 1251 , while the Regency Council had expected the royal chancellor Gamelin to be elected bishop. When the chapter refused a new election, Abel traveled to the Curia in Rome on behalf of the Regency Council . There he should achieve that the Pope rejected the election of Stuteville and instead appointed Gamelin as bishop. Abel achieved that Pope Anastasius IV rejected the election of Stuteville in February 1254. But then he made sure that before March 18, he himself was appointed the new Bishop of St Andrews in place of Gamelin. He was probably ordained bishop in Rome as well, but when he returned to Scotland in June 1254 he received a very frosty reception from the Regency Council. It was even considered whether he could be denied entry to Scotland. However, before June 29, Abel was able to return to St Andrews and take office. But he could not enjoy his trump card for long, because he died a few months later. He was buried in St Andrews Cathedral.
