Abel Prieto Jiménez (born November 11, 1950 in Pinar del Río , Cuba ) is a Cuban politician, writer, editor and teacher. He was Cuba's Minister of Culture from 1997 to 2012. It was again between July 2016 and July 2018. In between he was advisor to the Cuban President Raúl Castro from March 2012 to July 2016 . Since September 4, 2018 is the director of the office of the Martí program. Abel Prieto is a member of the Cuban Parliament .

Life

Abel Prieto studied Spanish language and literature at the University of Havana and later worked there as a professor. He was the director of the Letras Latinas publishing house and later became chairman of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba , the umbrella organization for the cultural sector in Cuba. In 1997 he became Minister of Culture and remained in office until 2012. He then became advisor to Raúl Castro , official title: Asesor del Presidente de los Consejos de Estado y de Ministros (advisor to the President of the Council of State and Council of Ministers ). In July 2016 he (temporarily) took over the office of Minister of Culture from Julián González Toledo . Prieto, on the other hand, is considered to be one of the best ministers of culture that Cuba has ever had, who tore the reins when there were disputes among the Cuban artists, but let them loose again in times of calm. He is also able to express his opinion to the authorities, even if they do not agree with their opinion.

In 1999 he published the novel El vuelo del gato, which moves between fiction and essay. The novel won the 2001 Critics' Prize and was later published in Spain. Prieto also wrote several volumes of short stories, including Los bitongos y los guapos (1980) and Noche de sábado (1989).

At the XXI. He presented his second novel Viajes de Miguel Luna on February 13, 2012 at the Havana Book Fair .
