The Abieta Chemie GmbH was a 1957 joint venture between Hoechst AG (formerly Meister Lucius & Bruening), Frankfurt, and Hercules Inc. , Wilmington / USA, founded chemical company. The shares in what was then Hoechst AG were transferred to Clariant Deutschland GmbH on July 1, 1997 . Both shareholders held 50 percent of the share capital. In 2008 Abieta Chemie GmbH was sold to the Munich-based private equity company Auctus. In mid-February 2009 ownership was transferred to the US company Arizona Chemical . On February 1, 2009, the acquisition of Abieta Chemie GmbH by Arizona Chemical GmbH was successfully completed. Gersthofen was chosen as the location for the production because the Terpenchemie was already located in the Hoechst AG plant there and there was the possibility of integration into the existing infrastructure. Production started in 1958.

The name Abieta refers to the raw material colophony (pine resin) processed by the company , the main component of which is a diterpene , abietic acid .
