Abnormal Thought Patterns is an American progressive metal band from Pleasanton , California that was formed in 2008.
history
After Jasun Tipton (electric guitar) had composed and recorded his first 12-minute instrumental piece Velocity and Acceleration in 2008, he decided to found Abnormal Thought Patterns with his brother Troy (electric bass) and Mike Guy (drums). Guy had been a friend of the Tipton twins before, although the twins had previously worked at Zero Hour . The three members then headed into the studio to record the first seven songs, which were released as a self-titled EP on CynNormal Lab Recordings in 2011 . In the fall of 2012, the debut album Manipulation Under Anesthesia was written and recorded, mixed by Matt LaPlant and mastered by Alan Douches . Jason Montero joined the cast as a further guitarist to support live. The debut album was released in 2013 via Lifeforce Records . On the new album Altered States of Consciousness are Tommy Rogers ( Between the Buried and Me ), Jeff Loomis ( Arch Enemy , Nevermore ), Michael Manring , Tim Roth ( Into Eternity ) and John Onder ( Artension , Michael Schenker Group ) as guest musicians Listen. The album was released in 2015, also on Lifeforce Records, and was mastered by Douches and mixed and produced by Jamie King . A performance at ProgPower Europe was planned for October 2015 , which the band had to cancel due to the illness of their drummer. Abnormal Thought Patterns' place at the festival went to the Polish group Animations.

According to Luka from stormbringer.at , the band plays instrumental progressive metal on Manipulation Under Anesthesia . However, the metal share is rather low compared to other bands such as Liquid Tension Experiment . In the songs were all genre typical properties such as "abrupt tempo and time signature changes , scales away from the major - / Minor scheme and above ground fast Saitengefrickel" present. With Autumn there is a fusion ballad and in Velocity and Acceleration Movement 7 a jazz guitar reminiscent of John Scofield is processed . In the song 4 String Lullaby there is a short bass solo . Harmonic Oscillations or Velocity and Acceleration Movement 6 would offer a "successful combination of distorted guitars and synth pad sounds ". Anton Kostudis from Metal.de stated in his review of Altered States of Consciousness that the technical playing level of the instruments is high, but lacking, in contrast to the debut album, a common thread. The band gets lost in "stupid Djent - grooves , endless sweeping orgies and hard-sounding tempo changes ".
