Ammonium permanganate is a dark purple solid that is soluble in water. It is sensitive to impact and slowly decomposes at room temperature. It has an orthorhombic crystal structure of the barite type with the space group Pnma (space group no. 62) and the lattice parameters a = 9.410 Å , b = 5.773 Å and c = 7.610 Å.
