The umbels short snout stubborn fly ( Abrachyglossum capitatum ) is a kind from the family of conopidae (Conopidae).

features

The flies reach a body length of 8 to 13 millimeters. Their proboscis is almost as long as their head and is shiny black-brown. The antennae are black, the third segment has short black-brown hair on the top. The forehead and crown are brown-yellow, the underside of the forehead is black. The face is shimmering golden yellow on the underside. The abdomen is black and has a golden yellow band on the second and third segments, the fourth and fifth segments are only covered with golden yellow. The scutellum is yellow-brown at the tip, otherwise black. The wings are tinted slightly brownish on the front edge. The legs are colored yellow except for the black hips and have short black hairs. The females have a shimmering sheen on the second to fifth abdomen segment. Your theka is large and colored shiny black. The species can be confused with several Leopoldius species, especially Leopoldius calceatus . However, these mostly have black colored legs, their third antennae is hairless and the leading edge of the wing is colored brown.

Occurrence and way of life

The animals are common in Europe. They are not uncommon locally in Central Europe in the south, but usually only occur in small numbers near forests and on meadows and roadsides. They are found on umbellifers from July to September , especially on hogweed ( Heracleum ).
