Abraham Bar Menachem (born May 16, 1912 as Alfred Gutsmuth in Wieseck near Gießen ; died March 24, 2017 in Netanja , Israel ) was an Israeli lawyer and politician .

Live and act

After visiting the Liebigschule Abraham Bar Menahem studied law at the Ludwigs-University of Giessen , where he was in 1933/1934 Wolfgang Mittermaier Dr. jur. PhD . In February 1934 he moved to the Netherlands and finally emigrated to Palestine in 1938 . From 1967 to 1970 and again from 1974 to 1978 he was mayor of the Israeli city of Netanya , where Bar Menachem lived until his death.

He has been committed to the reconciliation between Germany and Israel since the 1960s. Bar Menachem also established twinning between Netanya and Dortmund (1981) and his hometown Gießen (1978).

honors and awards

Bar Menachem was an honorary citizen of the city of Giessen (since 1987) and was an honorary colleague of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . He also received the Hedwig Burgheim Medal from the city of Giessen in 1982, the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in 1983 , the Hessian Order of Merit in 2011 and the Wilhelm Leuschner Medal in 2015 . In 2012 a portrait bust of him was unveiled in the Upper Hessian Museum in Gießen.
