Abraham Darby (* 1750 ; † 1791 ; called Abraham Darby III ) was an English iron manufacturer . He is the grandson of Abraham Darby I and builder of the Iron Bridge .

Life

Abraham Darby III came from an English Quaker family who developed metallurgy and iron refinement in England in the 17th and 18th centuries . At the age of 19 he took over the iron and steel works, which his grandfather Abraham Darby I (1667–1717) had built and which his father Abraham Darby II (1711–1763) had successfully continued.

Abraham Darby III became famous for the construction of the Iron Bridge near Shrewsbury , which opened on New Year's Day 1781. The 30-meter-long bridge was the world's first iron bridge to be built and gave its name not only to the town, but also to the valley in which the bridge was located. Abraham Darby successfully expanded the company he took over from his father. In 1784 there were eight blast furnaces and the internal rail network grew to over 30 km.
