Abraham Ostrzega (* 1889 in Okuniew near Warsaw , Russian Empire , † 1942 in the Treblinka extermination camp ) was a Polish sculptor .

Life

Ostrzega received his training as a sculptor in the workshops of Henryk Kuna and Edward Wittig . In the years between the First and the Second World War, he was one of the promoters of Jewish culture in Poland.

As a sculptor, Ostrzega mainly devoted himself to tomb art . He also made portrait busts and figural compositions. He received an award in 1923 for his figure group Motherhood , which was exhibited in the Warsaw National Art Gallery Zachęta .

The Ostrzegas plant was almost completely lost during the German occupation in World War II. Only his gravestone sculptures in the Jewish cemetery on Okopowa Street in Warsaw have survived . He spent the German occupation in the Warsaw ghetto and was murdered in the Treblinka extermination camp in 1942 .

Work (selection)

His mausoleum for the three writers Jizchok Leib Perez , Jakob Dinesohn and Salomon An-ski in the Warsaw Jewish Cemetery is known as the Mauzoleum Trzech Pisarzy . It has the shape of a chapel with a semi-dome, in which there is an image of the prophecy of the prophet Isaiah “about the day of the coming reconciliation”. The tomb is guarded by two winged lions.
