The crash of the DC-6 "Theodore Roosevelt" was an aircraft accident on September 10, 1961, in which 83 people died shortly after take-off.

plane

The eight-year-old Douglas DC-6 of President Airlines with the name "Theodore Roosevelt" was on a charter flight from Düsseldorf to Chicago with stops in Shannon and Gander .

course

The aircraft took off from Shannon Airport's runway 24 for an overnight flight to Gander, Canada . Shortly after take-off, the “Theodore Roosevelt” should make a right turn. Instead, the DC-6 leaned at least 90 degrees to the left and plunged into the River Shannon . All 83 inmates died, including 65 farmers from Germany who were on their way to a meeting. The accident is to date (2020) the worst airplane accident in Ireland .

Cause of accident

The investigators suspect the failure of the artificial horizon and / or the failure of the right aileron . The bad weather and mistakes by the pilots were probably also the cause. In 1994 Irish investigative papers were released which showed the commandant had alcohol in his blood.
