The Nová Říše Abbey (German Abbey Neureisch ) is a Premonstratensian abbey from the 13th century. It is located in Nová Říše , a Czech town in the Jihlava district in Moravia . Patronage is Ss. Peter and Paul.

location

The monastery is located about 30 km south of Jihlava (German Iglau) and about 10 km southeast of Telč (German Telč ) near the Vápovka. The monastery is in the middle of the village.

history

The Nová Říše Abbey in Moravia was founded around 1211 by Markvard von Hrádek and his wife Vojslava as a monastery for Premonstratensian chorus women. The house was subordinated to the Zábrdovice Abbey in Brno (German Obrowitz Abbey in Brünn), which also sent a provost. Originally, the monastery and church were dedicated to Our Lady. During the Hussite Wars (1419–1431), the monastery was plundered and destroyed several times. The only remnant from the time before the destruction is an important statue of St. Anne from the second half of the 14th century. After an eventful time, the female convent died out around 1596 and Nová Říše became an independent canony , which was repopulated with canons by the Zábrdovice Abbey. Nová Říše suffered from the Thirty Years War and had to be supported again in 1641 by Zábrdovice. A rapid upswing followed and in 1654 the provost received the right to the pontificals . In 1733 the canyon was elevated to an abbey and, under Abbot Pelikán, the library was significantly expanded and improved, and a school was set up. In 1813 a fire damaged the place and the monastery, which was followed by reconstruction and renovation. In the following years the canons looked after the surrounding parishes and promoted art and education. In May 1942, SS units stormed the monastery and it was converted into a children's camp. The Premonstratensians were deported to Auschwitz and murdered except for three novices. In February 1950 the canons of the rebuilt monastery were arrested again, this time by the communists, and disappeared after show trials in various camps. The property, art treasures and books as well as the buildings were confiscated and a military camp set up. In 1989/90 the monastery was rebuilt, but it was not until 1991 that the buildings were again owned by the Premonstratensians of Nová Říše. The buildings, which were returned in very poor condition, have now been renovated.

After the fire of 1813, the monastery was rebuilt and rebuilt until 1821. The painting St Peter and Paul (1705) is one of the most valuable pieces of equipment in the church, adorned with frescoes by Johann Lucas Kracker (1766–1767). Also important are the choir stalls from 1696 and the pulpit from 1700. The organ is the work of the organ builder Bedřich Semrád from Nová Říše from the years 1764–1765 with 23 stops on two manuals and pedal .
