history

From 1871, academies for the maintenance and standardization of the Spanish language based on the model of the Real Academia Española were established in several Latin American countries . As the last of the academies founded in the 19th century, the Guatemalan Academy of Language was founded on June 30, 1887 by the eight intellectuals Juan Fermín de Aycinena y Aycinena , Fernando Cruz , Ángel María Arroyo , Agustín Gómez Carrillo de Albornoz , Antonio Batres Jáuregui , José Matías Quiñónez , Antonio Machado y Palomo and Guillermo Francisco Hall Avilés and officially recognized by President Manuel Barillas the following year . In 1951, the academy participated in the founding of the Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española , in which the Real Academia Española and the currently 21 worldwide existing academies for Spanish language work together. As part of this collaboration, the Academy has also been involved in the publication of the Diccionario de la Lengua Española since the 21st edition (1992) . A number of typical Guatemalan expressions have been added to the dictionary over the years. The academy also contributed to the publication of the Nueva Gramática de la Lengua Española in 2009.
