Acetoxy group

The acetoxy group , abbreviated AcO or OAc, is a functional group that is derived from acetic acid (see figure). It differs from the acetyl group CH 3 -C (= O) - (Ac) in that it has an additional oxygen atom . The oxidation of ethanol produces acetic acid via the intermediate product acetaldehyde , in which a hydrogen atom is bonded to the acetoxy radical. In the acetylation of alcohols or phenols with acetyl chloride in the presence of a base, esters of acetic acid are formed which contain an acetoxy radical to which an alkyl or aryl radical is bonded. The name acetoxy is an abbreviation of the name acetyl-oxy.
