Achatius Cureus, also Achatius Curaeus or Achatius Scherer (* around 1531 in Marienburg ; † July 16, 1594 Osterwyk near Danzig ) was a German author and neo-Latin poet.

Life

After attending the city school in his hometown, he moved to the University of Frankfurt (Oder) in 1548, supported by a grant from the City Council . In 1553 he moved to the University of Wittenberg and went to Marienburg as a teacher. In 1558 he was appointed rector of the Academic Gymnasium Danzig and received a preaching position there. During the phase of the theological controversy between Philippists and Gnesiolutherans , Cureus took a Calvinist position and therefore had to go to a pastor in Osterwyk in 1590, where he stayed until the end of his life.

Cureus wrote casual poems using ancient literature. In these he developed a moral education mandate that reflects Reformation humanism in a poetic teaching poem. Among these educational writings, the “Carmen de discentium gradibus” published in Danzig in 1559 is particularly exemplary. He also described the plague, which often raged in Danzig, but interpreted it as a God-given event.
