Achille Lauro [ aˌkilːɛˈlauɾo ] (born June 16, 1887 in Piano di Sorrento , † November 15, 1982 in Naples ) was an Italian entrepreneur and politician of the fascists , the monarchist right and the neo-fascists .

Life

He was the fifth of six children of shipowner Gioacchino Lauro and his wife Laura Cafiero. He himself also became a shipowner and in 1923 founded Flotta Lauro , which became one of the most powerful Italian fleets of all time and was one of the most important southern Italian companies. In addition, he created a veritable financial empire. It is often stated as one of the decisive factors for his success that Lauro shared the profits with his workers. His practices of personal enrichment through corruption, building speculation and mafia-like entanglements are likely to have been at least as decisive .

Lauro made political career both during the fascist era and in post-war Italy. He was imprisoned by the Allies for 22 months for his fascist activities between 1933 and 1943. He then approached the monarchist movement of Alfredo Covelli and later supported, especially financially, the establishment of the Partito Nazionale Monarchico . He was mayor of Naples from 1952 to 1958 and again in 1961 and, as a typical populist who practiced a pronounced Panem-et-Circensis policy , was very popular with the population, which was reflected in the fact that he was in the 1952 and 1956 elections achieved the highest number of votes ever achieved in the city. At the same time, however, it was also very controversial because of its practices and political decisions.

Because of his dubious machinations, he was finally deposed as mayor by decree of the Roman central government and replaced by a provisional sindaco . He was then a member of the Chamber of Deputies for the monarchists until 1968 and later a senator until 1972. After the merger of the monarchists with the neo-fascist MSI , he again moved into the Chamber of Deputies as its representative, where he was politically active until 1979.

Towards the end of his long life, he had to witness the decline and economic ruin of his fleet.
