The willow-leaved swamp yarrow ( Achillea salicifolia ) survives the winter in the protective herbaceous layer or with the help of its subterranean runners. It is pollinated by insects. Its fruits are self-spreading (for example by shaking) or float water-spread.
Identifying features
The willow-leaved swamp yarrow flowers in July and August. Like Achillea ptarmica, it forms linear, lanceolate leaves. However, at least in the upper half of the stem, these are provided with some noticeable resin glands in the form of recessed points. There is also pressed, short hair on both sides. The leaves are dull gray-green in color and double-serrated. They become about 5 to 10 mm wide. Usually 6 to 8 white ray florets are formed, which are shorter than the approx. 11 mm wide flower heads.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.
Occurrence and location requirements
The willow-leaved swamp yarrow has its main occurrence in wet meadows and wet riparian herbaceous meadows. In Germany it occurs only scattered in Brandenburg along the lower Havel and on the Oder. A few stocks have also been sighted in North and East Mecklenburg, although these are more or less unstable. Your area extends over Eastern Europe to Asia. Its area border is in East Germany, although it is said to have expanded further west in the last few decades. Its southernmost occurrence was observed in Turkey. Achillea salicifolia is the characteristic of the Filipendulo-Petasition association. It is a moisture-loving species that can also endure a low salt content.
