Achna ( Greek Άχνα , Turkish Düzce ) is an abandoned village in the Gazimağusa district of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus . The place is now uninhabited and is used as a military camp of the armed forces of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Turkish troops in Cyprus .

history

The village of Achna was a sanctuary of Artemis-Cybele in antiquity. As a result, numerous archaeological finds have been made, including a. in the 19th century by Max Ohnefalsch-Richter , who sold his finds to European museums. In 1966 excavations took place again.

The place was inhabited by Greek Cypriots until 1974 . In 1973, in 1979 Cypriot Greeks were counted in the village.

New village

In 1974, after the armistice was concluded in the second phase of Operation Atilla , the village was still occupied by Turkish troops . The residents were able to flee to the nearby woods of Achna (Δασάκι της Άχνας, Dasaki tis Achnas), where they set up a makeshift tent city (Achna Refugee Camp). Later the new village, Dasaki Achnas , arose within sight of the old one, which is (now uninhabited) on the other side of the Green Line.
