Eight-song book
The eight- song book with the title “Etlich Cristlich lider / Lobgesang und Psalm” is the first German-language Protestant song collection, published in 1524. It is in a way the forerunner of all Protestant hymn books , together with the songbook by Johann Walter (also 1524) and the Erfurt Enchiridion .
content
The script, which is more like "a loose bookseller's summary" of songs circulating as single-sheet prints rather than a systematically compiled hymn book, was printed by Jobst Gutknecht in Nuremberg at the turn of the year 1523/1524 . For camouflage reasons, the title page does not have Nuremberg but Wittenberg as the place of publication. The brochure contains eight songs on twelve pages (on five melodies), four of them by Martin Luther . Three are from Paul Speratus , and one has been anonymously and variously ascribed to Justus Jonas the Elder .
Songs
- Now rejoice, dear Christians common (Luther)
- It is salvation we come here (Paul Speratus)
- In God I believe that he has (Speratus)
- Help God, how is man’s need (Speratus)
- Oh God, look into it from heaven (Luther)
- The unwise mouth speaks well (Luther)
- Out of deep distress I cry to you (Luther)
- In Jesus name we begin (anonymous, two-part sentence)
