Acosmeryx is a genus from the butterfly family of the hawkers (Sphingidae) within the subfamily Macroglossinae .

features

The top of the wings is mostly brown and gray in color and has a mosaic-like pattern. The outer edge of the front wing is indented, it is curved between the wires R4 and R5. The last link of the thread-like, rough- scaled antennae is very long. The butterflies lack eyelash-like scales on the compound eyes . The labial palps are large and rounded when viewed from the side. The abdomen has numerous spurs, the short ones are pale and rather thin, the long ones are stronger. The eighth tergite is deeply curved and separated from the sternite . The rails ( tibia ) of the hind legs carry two pairs of spurs, the proximal spurs are twice as long as the distal ones.

The eggs are smooth, shiny green and ovoid.

The caterpillars have a small head and a body that tapers forward from the first abdominal segment. The third thoracic segment and the first abdominal segment have a ventrolateral cantilever. The thoracic segments are dark anteriorly. The anal horn is of medium length and erect, but sharply curved. A longitudinal line runs dorsolaterally.

In the doll , the proboscis has grown together with the body. The seventh abdominal segment is severely incised at the rear edge. The cremaster is short and thick and has a pair of thorns at the top or is drawn out into a shaft.

Way of life

The caterpillars feed on climbing and trailing grapevine plants (Vitaceae), ray-stylus plants (Actinidiaceae) and rose apple plants (Dilleniaceae).

Occurrence and systematics

The range of the genus includes the Orient , Australasia and the eastern Palearctic . The range of one species, Acosmeryx naga , also extends to the western Palearctic in Tajikistan and Afghanistan . There are currently 19 known species:
