Adalberto Lopez

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adalberto "Dumbo" López (born July 4, 1923 in Guadalajara , Jalisco , † 1996 in Los Angeles , California ) was a Mexican football player who was five times top scorer in the Mexican Primera División and had his most successful time in the León AC . He got his nickname "Dumbo" because of his big ears.

Career

Dumbo López was one of the most successful center forwards in Mexico . He made his debut in 1941 for the CF Atlante , where he was under contract until 1946. However, during these five years he was only partially active for Atlante because his club had temporarily loaned him to Puebla FC . The bad luck for the talented López was that Horacio Casarín , the undisputed star of Atlante, took the same position of all things. Because Atlante had no place for two center strikers in the long run, López finally moved to León, where he played from 1946 to 1950. During this time he won two championships with León and even won the double in 1949. López played a part in these successes that should not be underestimated. Finally, he was in the three seasons between 1946/47 and 1948/49 with a total of 97 goals three times in a row top scorer of the Mexican league. His 36 goals in the 1947/48 season set a very special record that lasted for 48 years: never before was a Mexican player able to score so many goals in the first division. This record could only be equalized in 1995/96 by Carlos Hermosillo , who also scored 36 goals that season.

In 1950/51 López played at Atlas Guadalajara , but did not feel comfortable there and switched to city rivals Oro . In his jersey he was once again top scorer in 1951/52, for which "meager" 16 goals were enough that year. His next station was the third first division of the city, Deportivo Guadalajara , where he let his career end in the 1953/54 season and with 21 goals was again top scorer of the Mexican league; although this time he had to share the title with two other players. Overall, Dumbo López was five times top scorer in Mexican league football - more often than any other Mexican player. In general, he was only surpassed in this regard by the Brazilian Evanivaldo Castro , who won the Mexican top scorer eight times. Over the course of his career, Dumbo brought it to 196 goals in the Primera División.

Individual evidence

  1. The book Por amor a la camiseta (Editorial Clio, México 1998, p. 72 f) by the Mexican football historian Carlos Calderón Cardoso names the Barrio de la Trinidad in Guadalajara . Other sources call the place Cocula .
  2. López still have some goalscorer lists this season under Club León; but reliable sources show in unison that he was in the service of Chivas Guadalajara that season:
    - Juan Cid y Mulet: Libro de Oro del Fútbol Mexicano. Volume II, B. Costa-Amic, Mexico City, 1961, p. 383
    - the daily newspaper El Siglo de Torreón
    - and also the usually extremely reliable website of the RSSSF has since corrected its original assignment to Club León.
