Adam Bielecki (mathematician)

Adam Bielecki (born February 13, 1910 in Boryslaw , † June 10, 2003 ) was a Polish mathematician .

His father was employed by a Galician oil company and his mother came from a family of Galician intellectuals. From 1912 the family moved to Kraków , where Bielecki grew up and studied mathematics (influenced by Leon Chwistek and Stanisław Zaremba ). He was also musically gifted, played the piano and published poetry. He graduated in mathematics in 1931 and published his first mathematical work. In 1935 he received his doctorate at the Jagiellonian University under Witold Wilksz ( global representation of m-dimensional surfaces in n-dimensional Euclidean space using implicit functions ). Then he was a lecturer at the chair for theoretical physics - until the university closed in 1939, when he and other professors were sent to concentration camps . After international protests (and also those of some German academics), most were released in 1940. During the Second World War he taught at the Underground University in Kraków and from 1947 was a professor at the newly founded Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin . In 1949 he completed his habilitation there, became assistant professor in 1950 and full professor in 1958. He was temporarily vice-rector there and retired in 1980.

Bielecki was awarded the Stefan Banach Prize in 1951 . In addition to his professorship in Lublin, he was professor at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences from 1954 to 1968 .

Bielecki dealt in particular with the theory of differential equations using topological methods. In two works he succeeded in reducing the axioms of Euclidean geometry following David Hilbert .

He was married twice and had three daughters.
