Adam Schreck

Adam Schreck (born December 17, 1796 in Margareten , today in Vienna ; † March 29, 1871 there) was an Austrian Augustinian canon .

Life

Adam Schreck was the son of a day laborer. Through hard work and supported by a scholarship, Schreck was not only able to achieve the Matura , but also to study philosophy at the University of Vienna .

At the age of twenty, Schreck joined the Augustinian Canons of Klosterneuburg in 1816 and began to study theology there, among other things . In 1821 he was ordained a priest and taught there between 1825 and 1837 as a professor of church history and canon law. In 1829 he advanced to the position of novice master and in 1837 he also took over the post of monastery director.

In 1852 Schreck also became a temporary archivist and in the following year he was elected provost of Klosterneuburg Monastery by the chapter assembly. Under his guidance, the pen began to flourish. Schreck was not only able to restore the monastic finances, but even acquire various goods in Hungary .

As a result of the restoration of various buildings of the monastery and the restructuring of their use, Schreck founded a fruit and viticulture school . This educational institution quickly grew into one of the best wine technical schools in Europe . Of course, the success also lay with the educators, the most famous of whom was Baron August Wilhelm von Babo .

Provost Adam Schreck died on March 29, 1871 in Vienna at the age of 75.
