Adam Stanisław Naruszewicz (born October 20, 1733 near Pińsk , † July 8, 1796 in Janów Podlaski ) was a Polish poet of the Enlightenment , historiographer , Jesuit and bishop .

Naruszewicz had been a Jesuit since 1748. He was also court poet and historiographer of King Stanislaus II August . In 1788 he became Bishop of Smolensk and in 1790 Bishop of Lutsk .

His Enlightenment poetry was influenced by Horace and Anacreon , which he also translated. It includes classical odes , idylls, satires , such as B. “Satry” (1778) and fables based on Jean de La Fontaine . His main work is the representation of Polish history from Christianization to 1386.

Naruszewicz was the first modern historian in Polish history. His history of the Polish nation referred to the early rulers of the Polans of Mieszko I and Bolesław I collectively as Piasts .
